Self-guided tours by bike (1-4 days)

Self-guided tours by bike (1-4 days)
We can offer some tours from 1 to 4 days in and around Kyoto. Please have look at the Self-Guided Tours page to get an impression of the proceedings. We can work out a complete tour for you, including a route plan and hotel reservations. The multi-day tours lead either to Nara or Miyama on the first day, for which there are separate tours with detailed descriptions. The daily distance is about 60 km. Due to the mountainous landscape however a good level of fitness is required. But the mountains are also easy to conquer with our e-bikes. For two of the tours return to Kyoto is by train. A bike bag is required for this. There is also a detailed description for a 6 or 10 day tour to the Japanese Alps. Please contact us if you are interested. These tours can be organized as guided private tour. Please read the conditions on the private tour page.

Kyoto (1 day)
In addition to the guided tours in Kyoto, there are of course a lot more interesting things to discover. Please take a look at the Kyoto cycling map to get an impression. We can put together an optimal tour plan for your navigation.
If you want to get out of the city, we can offer a 36 km long, almost car-free route that leads over two 400 m high passes. On the way back you will pass through a traditional village and ride along the Kamogawa River.

Kyoto - Miyama - Mikata - Biwako Lake - Kyoto (4 days)
The first day leads to Miyama a traditional village about 60 km from Kyoto with reed thatched houses (see detailed description under Miyama Tour). On the second day you ride via Obama at the Japanese Sea to the five lakes of Mikata. You cycle along the coast with fantastic views of the Japanese Sea. In Mikata you can get to a viewing terrace with a fantastic view over the five lakes of Mikata and the Japanese Sea. The hotel is located directly at one of the lakes. On the third day you continue to the largest lake in Japan, the Biwako. Unfortunately, the roads there are very busy. Overnight stay in a hotel in Sakamoto. On the fourth day you ride along the coast of the lake to Ohara, a traditional village, where you have the opportunity to explore the place. From Ohara it’s not far back to Kyoto.

Kyoto - Miyama - Miyazu - Kyotango (3 days)
The first day leads to Miyama a traditional village about 60 km from Kyoto with reed-thatched houses (see detailed description under Miyama Tour). From there, on the second day you continue to Miyazu at the Japanese Sea. Amanohashidate there is considered to be one of the three most beautiful landscapes in Japan. This is a long day on the bike at 90km. On the third day you will cycle along the coast of the Japanese Sea with fantastic views of the azure blue sea. You will pass through many traditional fishing villages. The end point is the train station of Kyotango from where you can take the train back to Kyoto. Another option would be to stay in a Japanese Onsen thermal bath. The most famous is Kinosaki, a whole town of Onsen. You can purchase an Onsen pass and visit several different Onsen. But that would mean 100 km on the third day.

Kyoto - Nara - Yoshino - Koyasan (3-4 days)
On the first day you cycle to Nara, the first capital of Japan (see detailed description under Nara Tour). On the second day you continue to Yoshino a center of the Japanese Shugendo religion, overnight stay in a Japanese inn. On the third day, you continue to Koyasan. This is a temple town at an altitude of 800 m and the center of esoteric Shingon Buddhism. You can decide whether to continue straight to Hashimoto and take the train back from there, or to spend the night in one of the temples and try a vegetarian dinner. It is definitely worth staying there longer as there is a lot to see. In the case of an overnight stay in Koyasan, continue the next day to Hashimoto and return by train to Kyoto.
